1. Plan
Without a plan, you will have no clue where to go next. The thing about the travel industry and the internet is that it is constantly evolving. What this means to you is that your plan will constantly be changing. But in order to be prepared for what is to come, you have to have a plan of some sort to guide you. Plan how you will reel in customers, what marketing methods you will use, what kinds of content you will have, and when you want to achieve certain goals.
2. Research
Research is one of the most important pieces to any kind of business. You can have the finest equipment and the best work ethic, but without knowledge of your industry it is extremely difficult to have success. You need to know where your industry is at and where it is heading. By knowing anything and everything that has to do with your industry, you can better approach prospects and know how to entice them.
3. Marketing
As I briefly mentioned in the plan section, it is vital that you have a marketing scheme of some sort. Without marketing and advertising, nobody knows that you exist. Come up with a marketing plan that will reel in prospects from multiple angles. And it does not have to be one advertising method. The more methods you use the better chance you have of reaching prospects.
4. Goal setting
Goal setting can be extremely powerful when jumping on a travel business opportunity. Any type of business you start can be difficult in the beginning, but giving yourself goals to strive for will keep you motivated. When times get hard, you will have your goals to keep you moving forward.
5. Confidence
Running a business is far from being an easy task. But so many people do it because of the endless amount of benefits it presents and the sense of pride that comes with it. In order to run a business, you have to have confidence and faith in yourself. The second you begin to doubt yourself is the second you have failed yourself. You will make mistakes, but you have to be willing to move on and make that next big move to have success with a work from home travel agency.
Were you a travel agent around 1990? I’m hoping to understand the US travel agency business in 1990. Specifically:
- When you used a service like SABRE or APOLLO to book a ticket where did the money go? Customer pays Travel Agent for Ticket and when does Travel Agent pay Airline? Does Travel Agent actually pay Airline or does Travel Agent pay SABRE or APOLLO?
- When did the Travel Agent collect commission? Did Airline/SABRE reimburse the commission or did Travel Agent withhold the commission?
- I presume that there were fees for having a SABRE or APOLLO machine, correct?
- How about the Airlines, what was their relationship with SABRE or APOLLO? What sort of fees did they pay? To whom?
I am trying to understand the cash flows and contractual relationships between:
- customer (passenger)
- travel agency
- Reservation system (SABRE/APOLLO etc…)
- Airline
